Want to help Israel? Help its Arab citizens

with 4 comments

Paul Usiskin has an editorial in Today’s JC:

They are one of the poorest sectors in Israel’s economy and neither contribute to nor benefit from Israel’s consistent growth. The discrimination against them is the culmination of nearly 60 years of betrayal of Palestinian Arabs.

I would add, betrayed both by the Jewish citizens of Israel and by the Arab nations. Palestinian citizens of Israel simply don’t fit anyone’s political agenda.

  1. The following blogger in his list of the top 8 lies as number 2 that Hitler was evil. Mind you he isn’t a White NeoNazi but some guy from India.

  2. Indeed. And I might add, that if they are citizens of Israel, they should not need support be from Arab nations. Are they citizens or are they guests? Can an Arab logically be an equal citizen in Israel?

  3. Jez,

I think you’re being intentionally provocative, but I’ll still take the bait. A man is not a guest in his own house. Israeli Arabs, or as many prefer to call themselves, Palestinian citizens of Israel, are by any moral and legal right equal citizens or the state of Israel and equal members of Israeli society.

The fact that these rights are not held in practice should be constantly challenged. Palestinian Israelis, as a marginalised minority, deserve your support just as Algerian French deserve mine.

When I say betrayed, I mean that the issue of Palestinian citizens of Israel was intentionally subdued by media and politicians on all sides, Arab and Israeli, because it didn’t fit neither the narrative of ‘land of the Jewish people’ or the narrative of ‘oppressive colonial occupier’.

  4. Yishay,
Provocative maybe, but never without reason (ie not for the fun of it!).
Sure, they are in their own house. Sure, they are citizens, officially, in the same way Jewish Israelis are. However, we come back to the ‘debate’ about the jewish nature of israel. Israel is, by definition the ‘land of the jewish people’. That is not simply a narrative. It is a fact. And if Israel is to remain the ‘land of the Jewish people’, it’s gonna have to become increasingly oppressive against it’s Arab ‘citizens’. Either that, or deport them. Maybe there is a third way. I don’t see one as long as Israel remains the ‘land of the Jewish people’ though.

Point taken on the ‘betrayal’ of Israeli Arabs by all sides. I simply wanted to point out the glaring fact, that Israeli Arabs are Arabs before they are Israelis (that’s not something I celebrate. I merely observe it).

If addressing the facts head on is to be a ‘radical’ and not a ‘modrate’, fair enough: I’ll be a radical!
